Why God Didn't Send His Only Daughter

She wouldn't have toed the line
or seen the point of walking on waves
and turning water into wine;

dismissing the miracles as dubious,
an excuse to show off, and stubbornly refuse
to go about her Father’s business
because it seemed too fatuous and vague.
She’d have kept the Spirit waiting
while she gathered tools, children,
a couple of goats and
letters needing answers,
before being taken to the Wilderness.
In forty hours she’d have located water
and started laying out a kitchen garden,
and wouldn’t have hung round, brooding,
until the Devil sloped up making suggestions.
In next to no time he’d be firmly in his place,
told to stop trifling with temptation and
feed the hens, start to pull his weight.
And come the crucifixion, she’d be missing,
off on some urgent errand for a friend,
babysitting, or helping with the lambing.
